Civil War Hospital cave to Agios Achillios

The route starts from the parking lot of Agios Achillios island, from where we will be transferred to the village of Vrontero, to start our tour. We will hike on a dirt road going down towards the banks of the small Prespa (30′ – 5Km), in the place where the village of Agathoto, which has now disappeared, was located. In the middle of this route, is the cave of doctor Kokkalis, the guerillas’ hospital during the Greek civil war, which we will visit.

Arriving at the shores of Minor Prespa, we continue on the lakeside path that will lead us to the core of the Prespes National Park. The easy route (6 km) moves parallel to the banks of the small Prespa offering enchanting images to the visitor, in a landscape of absolute tranquility and peace. After about 2.5 hours we reach the site of another old village, Daseri, where few ruins testify to its existence in the past.

From here, we continue by kayaks, paddling in the calm waters of the lake, towards the picturesque islet of Agios Achillios, located in the heart of the Prespa National Park. In about 1.5 hours (4 Km) we will reach the island where we will visit the ruins of the Royal church built by Samuel II, the “Tsar of the Bulgarians” and learn about the ancient city of Lyka and the legend of the island.

Finally, crossing the floating foot bridge, 600m long that connects Agios Achilleios with the land, we will end up at the point (parking) from where we started.
